Getting startedSlackIn the Slack desktop app for Windows

Open the shortcuts list, find a conversation, or start writing a new message.

Show the keyboard shortcuts list (guide entry)
The opening HTML of the shortcut list (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts) includes paragraphs for Ctrl+, with data-show-locales="fr-fr", Ctrl+/ with "en-us,en-gb,pt-br,ko-KR,zh-cn,zh-tw,ru", and Ctrl+・ with "ja". Its Windows/Linux table assigns Ctrl+, to preferences. The navigation guide (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/115003340723-Navigate-Slack-with-your-keyboard) gives Ctrl+/ for the shortcuts list without a data-show-locales attribute on that paragraph. These are observations about document content and attributes. Their relationship to the app’s display language, keyboard layout, app version and runtime destination is unconfirmed; document locale attributes are not treated as application conditions. Ctrl+/ is retained as the guide’s published value. The Ctrl+, shortcut-list paragraph remains unresolved documentary evidence, not a confirmed equivalent alternative.

Runtime keyboard-language and layout applicability are unconfirmed; the source HTML documents this chord in its data-show-locales="fr-fr" block (a document observation, not a runtime condition)This shortcut carries Slack’s single asterisk: it may differ when the keyboard is configured for a language other than English. The earlier attribution of Ctrl+Shift+backtick to an English keyboard is unsupported and is withdrawn. The English and Japanese shortcut-list HTML (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts; https://slack.com/intl/ja-jp/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts) documents Ctrl+Shift+backtick under data-show-locales="fr-fr" and Ctrl+Shift+backslash under "en-us,en-gb,pt-br,ko-KR,ru". These attributes describe document variants; they do not establish runtime app-language, keyboard-language or layout conditions. The backtick chord is retained as documentary evidence, with runtime keyboard-language and layout applicability unconfirmed. No equivalent JIS binding has been verified, and no backslash alternative has been added. The basics table also does not explain how the target message is chosen, so the affected message at runtime is unconfirmed.

Open [Activity] (shortcut-list entry)
The shortcut list (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts) documents Ctrl+Shift+M for [Activity]; the keyboard navigation guide (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/115003340723-Navigate-Slack-with-your-keyboard) documents Ctrl+Shift+3. These are separate documentary entries. Neither source establishes whether the guide’s 3 is a fixed binding or depends on a navigation position or displayed number. Applicable app builds and navigation configurations, interchangeability of the two bindings, and their runtime behaviour remain unconfirmed; no device test was performed. This item retains the shortcut-list value.

Unread and read messagesSlackIn the Slack desktop app for Windows

Jump to an unread message (first or latest unconfirmed)
The shortcut list (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts) describes Ctrl+J as moving to the most recent unread message, while the navigation guide (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/115003340723-Navigate-Slack-with-your-keyboard) says the first unread message. Both describe an unread-message destination, but which end is reached at runtime is unconfirmed. The original Japanese versions show the same discrepancy: https://slack.com/intl/ja-jp/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts and https://slack.com/intl/ja-jp/help/articles/115003340723-Navigate-Slack-with-your-keyboard. The permissions article (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/202395258-Edit-or-delete-messages) also lets owners and admins delete other members’ messages in certain conversations, but it does not establish that this Delete-key shortcut applies to those messages. That administrator keyboard scope remains unconfirmed.

Message input and formattingSlackWhen the cursor is in the Slack message input

Open the unsend confirmation (documented procedure)
Within 15 seconds of sending, while still in the same conversation, with an empty message input and permission to delete messagesThe detailed [Unsend a message] procedure (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/202395258-Edit-or-delete-messages) says to press Ctrl+Z, then select [Unsend] to confirm. This entry covers opening that confirmation, without claiming that Ctrl+Z alone completes the unsend. Once confirmed, the sent content returns to the message input. Workspace permissions can restrict this action. The source does not specify which keys confirm it, so no Enter or Tab sequence has been added. It also offers [Don’t show me this again]; runtime behaviour with that option enabled is unconfirmed. The shortcut list (https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/201374536-Slack-keyboard-shortcuts) separately labels Ctrl+Z “Unsend a message”; the more limited action label here follows the detailed procedure.

Ctrl+, here is the table’s preferences entry. The additional quote preserves the opening paragraph’s different shortcut-list claim; it does not establish the runtime result.

About this page

Checked / Updated

Move between conversations, catch up on unread messages and compose messages in Slack’s Windows desktop app using the keyboard. One-key reply actions require a focused message, so each entry’s conditions matter. The guide extends to huddles and canvases, alongside Windows commands for switching open windows and managing files in File Explorer. Slack entries reflect English documentation checked on 2 November 2026; Windows commands have separate Windows 11 documentation checks. Specific Slack builds, Windows editions and physical key positions on JIS or US keyboards remain untested. Keys are logical names; Slack shortcuts marked with a single asterisk may differ when the keyboard language is not English. Entry notes explain permissions and unresolved source differences, whose runtime applicability remains unconfirmed.

Slack-specific entries were checked against the live English official documentation on 2 November 2026. Their app=current value identifies the documentation scope, not a particular tested build. The Japanese baseline from 30 October and supplements from 1 November, including their original verification events, remain in the input evidence. No app build or individual Windows edition was tested.

Keys are logical key names. The JIS and US layout selections do not establish identical physical positions or model-specific Fn combinations. Check symbol positions on your own keyboard; physical positions on JIS and US hardware have not been tested.

The 22 included Windows commands are the current shared English Windows 11 records. Their sources, conditions, notes and verification events dated 20 October or 2 November 2026 are unchanged. Their Windows-version checks and the Slack app checks cover different environment axes.

Slack warns that shortcuts marked with a single asterisk may differ when the keyboard is configured for a language other than English. The retained backtick emoji-reaction entry has an unresolved document-locale discrepancy explained in its note; it is not a verified English or JIS physical binding.

Ctrl+Z has separate documented uses: opening the unsend confirmation from an empty message input, undoing message formatting while editing, and undoing a canvas action. The keys to confirm an unsend have not been verified. Read each entry’s condition.

Workspace and tab shortcuts that take an assigned number have not been expanded into guessed number ranges. The English and original Japanese lists both document Ctrl+[number] for a workspace and Shift+Ctrl+[number] for a Windows tab; they do not establish a universal numeric range or resolve the separate Activity-guide discrepancy.

The shortcut-list entrance and preferences command have differing descriptions within and between Slack’s sources. The guide’s Ctrl+/ and the table’s Ctrl+, preferences entry are retained. Opening-HTML shortcut-list paragraphs for Ctrl+, (data-show-locales="fr-fr") and Ctrl+・ ("ja") are also recorded in the relevant notes. Document locales are not mapped to unverified app-language, keyboard-layout or version conditions.

Check the app and OS version and your keyboard layout. Behavior can depend on your settings and active app. Each action links to its official source.
