Getting startedSlackIn the Slack desktop app for Mac

Start with a new message, a search in the current conversation, or Help.

Compose a new message
The official Mac table lists both ⌘N and ⇧⌘K for composing a message, and also lists ⇧⌘K for browsing DMs. The documentation does not establish which context selects each behaviour or which takes priority; this has not been tested on a device. The ⇧⌘K entry records both documented uses.

Show keyboard shortcuts
This is the Mac shortcut in the English navigation guide. In the main article’s HTML, the slash version is tagged for English and several other locales, while the Japanese version uses ⌘・. These document tags do not establish runtime language or layout conditions, and no JIS physical position has been inferred. The main article’s French-tagged version uses ⌘, for shortcuts, while its Mac table uses the same chord for preferences; applicability remains unconfirmed.

Apps and the screenOperating system

Find apps, switch between open apps and windows, and close them. This section also covers locking the screen when you step away.

Show or hide Spotlight
When ⌘+Space is assigned to SpotlightThis assumes ⌘+Space is assigned to Spotlight. With multiple input sources, some macOS versions or settings may use this combination to switch input sources instead. If that happens, check the Spotlight and Input Sources assignments in [System Settings] › [Keyboard] › [Keyboard Shortcuts] and change the conflicting shortcut. Apple’s note on the same source page confirms that these shortcuts can change input sources in some macOS versions when you use multiple input sources to type in different languages.

Conversations and channelsSlackIn the Slack desktop app for Mac

Open channels, DMs, history and conversation details, or return from a thread.

Open [Home]
When [Home] is assigned number 1 in the navigation barThe main table assigns ⌃1 to [Home]. The screen-reader guide’s default order for people with access to Slackbot assigns ⌃1 to Slackbot and ⌃2 to [Home]; it also says that numbers follow the order of your tabs. Hold Control to check the number shown in your navigation bar. Slackbot access alone does not determine your assignment. Device behaviour is untested. See the [official screen-reader guide](https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/360000411963-Use-Slack-with-a-screen-reader).

Browse DMs / compose a new message (context unresolved)
The official Mac table assigns ⇧⌘K both to browsing DMs and to composing a new message. This entry records those documented uses together; it does not mean that both actions happen at once. Their contexts and priority are unresolved in the documentation and untested on a device. ⌘N has its own compose-message entry.

It does not by itself establish that unsending is complete. The guide offers [Don’t show me this again], but does not specify how that choice changes subsequent confirmation behaviour. No confirmation key has been inferred. The time, empty-input, same-conversation and permission limits come from the [official edit/delete guide](https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/help/articles/202395258-Edit-or-delete-messages).

Open [Activity]
When [Activity] is assigned number 3 in the navigation barThe navigation guide gives ⌃3 for [Activity] on Mac. The main table also lists ⇧⌘M. In the screen-reader guide’s default order for people with access to Slackbot, ⌃3 opens DMs and ⌃4 opens [Activity]; numbers change when tabs are reordered. Hold Control to check the number shown in your navigation bar. ⌃3 is conditional on that assignment, and device behaviour is untested. Move focus to the last visible message in a conversation
With the empty message field focused and the preference set so that ↑ moves focus to messagesThe default ↑ behaviour edits the last message you sent. The empty-field condition comes from the navigation guide; it does not override that preference.

About this page

Checked / Updated

Slack’s Mac desktop shortcuts help you move from finding a channel or DM to catching up on unread messages. They also cover formatting text in messages and canvases, uploading files and huddle controls. The same key can act differently in a message field, on a focused message or in a canvas, so each entry’s conditions matter.

The 113 Slack entries record checks against English documentation on 2 November 2026. The 21 shared macOS entries target Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26 and retain their own check dates. Documentation checks do not establish tested behaviour on a device, Slack build or macOS release. Symbol keys use US positions as a reference. Switching to a JIS diagram does not confirm positions or behaviour, and Slack’s keyboard-language differences have not been mapped to JIS/US layouts.

Use these Slack keyboard shortcuts on Mac to find channels and DMs, review unread messages, edit and format messages, upload files, and work with canvases and huddles. The 113 Slack entries were checked against English official documentation on 2 November 2026. The 21 shared macOS entries retain their recorded source-check dates. Read each section and item condition: the same key can act differently in a message field, a focused message, [All unread] or a canvas. Documentation checks do not establish a Slack build, macOS release behaviour, or tested JIS/US key positions.

The shared macOS entries cover macOS Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26. Availability depends on the app and can be affected by changed keyboard settings.

🌐 means the Fn (Function) or Globe key. If an F key controls brightness or another hardware feature, combine it with Fn to send a standard function key.

Symbol-key descriptions retain the official notation and use US positions as their reference. You can switch the diagrams between JIS and US. The JIS diagram is a display aid; it does not establish tested JIS positions or behaviour.

Finder commands and text-editing commands have separate conditions. The same chord can do different things depending on its target.

The shared macOS pack on this page contains 21 operations, including app switching, files and access to settings. It does not include keys for opening Control Centre or Notification Centre and does not cover every macOS function.

Operations exclusive to macOS 27 or later in the referenced current documentation are not included.

Slack’s official help distinguishes some symbol shortcuts by keyboard language. Those document distinctions have not been assigned to US or JIS physical layouts by inference.

F1, F6, PageUp and PageDown retain the official key names. Use Fn (🌐) if your settings require it for standard F-key input. Compact-keyboard alternatives for Page keys have not been confirmed.

Use the shared macOS entries for ⌘, to open app settings, ⌘W to close a window and ⌘Q to quit an app. These are not duplicated under Slack’s namespace. The Slack Mac table calls its settings [Preferences].

The shortcut table describes ⌘J as jumping to the most recent unread message in a conversation; the navigation guide describes the first unread message. This documentation difference has not been resolved by a device test.

The English navigation guide, the main article’s Mac tables and their explanatory text were checked on 2 November 2026, including section navigation, conversation search and separate windows, message reading and [Activity]. No device test was performed. Shared macOS records retain their inherited verification dates.

The Mac table lists ⇧⌘K for both composing a message and browsing DMs. The contexts and priority are unresolved. Records also explain the ⌘J destination difference and the locale-specific shortcut-list chords; HTML locale tags do not prove runtime applicability.

The official HTML lists ⇧⌘\ for English and several other locales and ⇧⌘_ for Japanese. Only the inherited English-tagged chord is included here. These are not treated as JIS/US layout equivalents or confirmed alternatives in one environment. R on a focused message is a separate entry. The navigation guide’s ⌘/ and the main article’s Japanese-tagged ⌘・ remain documented differences with unconfirmed runtime conditions.

Tab with M opens the [Message actions] menu when a conversation message is focused and Mac Full Keyboard Access is enabled. Number-based workspace and tab switching and the Japanese-tagged emoji chord are outside this page’s current scope. Previous/next workspace and tab shortcuts are included.

In the message field, ↑ edits the last sent message by default. The main article says a preference can change it to focus the last visible conversation message. The navigation guide’s instruction to read from an empty field does not establish that this works regardless of that preference.

The official article says message text-formatting shortcuts also work in canvases. This supports the formatting entries in [Message and canvas text]; it does not extend message-field line-break and selection commands to canvases. Canvas-specific headings, lists, search and editing have their own conditions.

Check the app and OS version and your keyboard layout. Behavior can depend on your settings and active app. Each action links to its official source.
